In 2013, Pastor Bryan Aalborg became the lead pastor at Charlotte Sharon Adventist Church with plans to build a new facility in southeast Charlotte. However, a unique opportunity arose when the church was offered the chance to acquire WGFY 1480 AM, a radio station previously owned by Disney. After prayerful consideration, the church leadership decided to prioritize radio ministry over constructing a new building, believing that the airwaves could reach far more people with God’s message. The station was rebranded as WGFY: “With Grace For You” and has since become a powerful evangelistic tool for the Carolinas.
Supported by a dedicated team of volunteers, WGFY operates daily with the goal of spreading God’s word to the Charlotte metropolitan area. The station also partners with local leaders, including Carolina Conference President Leslie Louis, who records hour-long Bible Breakthrough Sessions to provide listeners with deep insights into Scripture. Pastor Aalborg reflects on the station’s mission: “With 2.7 million potential listeners in metro Charlotte, we have a tremendous responsibility to reach people seeking meaning and hope.”
WGFY actively participates in community events throughout the year, creating opportunities to share its mission and connect with listeners. The station has grown significantly, and its impact is reflected in the personal testimonies of those who have found faith and truth through its programming.
Linda Blake’s story is one of transformation through WGFY. A simple comment from a coworker—“You know you’re supposed to attend church Saturday?”—sparked her curiosity about the Sabbath. After struggling to find a pastor to explain the Biblical truth, she stumbled upon WGFY late one night while searching for a radio station. She was captivated by the programming, which provided clear evidence about the Sabbath, and eagerly wrote down the Bible references she heard. The station’s teachings led her to visit Sharon Church, where she met the very speaker she had heard on the radio. “Just as I stumbled upon 1480 AM and found the information I was looking for, I hope and pray it can be the same vehicle for others who are also seeking,” she shared.
Another life changed by WGFY is Rick Lauer, a former atheist and Darwinist. While driving long distances for work, he began listening to WGFY at the recommendation of his business partner. A program featuring a debate between Christian apologist Ken Ham and scientist Bill Nye challenged his worldview. Through the debate and subsequent programming, Rick came to believe in a Creator and accepted Jesus. “I found Jesus through WGFY. God found me and saved me,” he said. Now, Rick shares God’s love and hope with others facing struggles like depression and addiction.
Pastor Aalborg emphasizes that WGFY’s work is made possible by the Carolina Evangelism Fund, which enables ministries like this to spread God’s message across the Carolinas. “This radio ministry is a vital tool for connecting with people where they are,” Aalborg explained. “It’s an opportunity to bring light to those searching for meaning in a chaotic world.”
Through the support of members and the dedication of the Sharon Church family, WGFY continues to transform lives, offering hope and truth to thousands of listeners every day. It stands as a powerful example of how media can be used to fulfill the Great Commission, reaching hearts and changing lives in ways that traditional methods cannot.
